Monday, August 16, 2004 Good thinking. In
Coimbatore we have a NGO of local people and industries banded
together in an organisation called SIRUTHULI. This organisation has
taken up the desilting of local tanks and the river flowing through
the town over the past one year. The results are spectacular. Three
huge tanks have been filled with rain/river water and the
groundwater level has definitely come up. This has to be replicated
in each and every river basin then the problem of drought and floods
can be alleviated to a great extent. the cost will be a fraction of
that being spent in grandoise dam projects and the benefits will
reach a greater number of people.
