Water Resources Augmentation/Development/Rejuvenation
Siruthuli in its initial phase of operations, is very much concerned and involved in
rectifying the defects and harness / conserve the water in the existing water bodies in Coimbatore district.
Large Scale Rainwater Harvesting
The initial phase aims at dredging the 9 arterial tanks
and 2 canals branching off from river Noyyal. The Noyyal
water system dates back to the Chera period, at a time
when there were no earth moving equipments available
and even implements had to be hand-made. 22 tanks were
dug with a long-term vision in a systematic manner adorning
the present city of Coimbatore like a necklace as below:

Over a period of time, during the last 4 decades,
the tanks have fallen into a state of ruin thereby
losing the purpose for which they were dug and
making water a very scarce commodity. Due to lack
of methodical plans to replenish the sewage treatment,
the ground water is getting contaminated rapidly.
In order to restore the lost glory to Coimbatore
and also to make the reservoirs of Coimbatore
water rich, Siruthuli has desilted
7 out of 9 arterial tanks besides standardizing
them.
Solid Waste Management
Due to lack of proper disposal methods, city's
daily garbage accumulation of 500 to 750 tons
are mostly dumped in the low lying areas like
canals and water bodies thereby reducing the capacity
of water storage and also contaminating the quality
of water and land. Hence, an integrated system
is being drawn along with a system to segregate
the garbage at source into wet and dry. The wet
garbage will be used for manure or for energy
conversion and the dry will be used as land fills.
Plastics will be segregated and disposed off suitably.
Afforestation
Coimbatore
was once a green cover rich area with the western
ghats comprising of several 1000 km of acres
of rain forests, but due to severe deforestation,
the green cover has almost been reduced to nothing
which also accounts for the drastic reduction
of rainfall in Coimbatore district. In order
to augment rainfall initiative, Siruthuli
has planned to plant 1.5 million trees to represent
the 1.5 million population in the next five years.
Siruthuli plans to have tree
parks in many areas within the city wherever land
and water is available, so that the saplings can
be raised in a nursery for about 8 months before
being planted. Siruthuli also
has contacted many schools to involve the school
children in raising of saplings and finally planting
of trees.
Sewage Treatment
The sewage generated by the city's population
is finding its way into the tanks of Coimbatore
polluting the aquifers. Conforming to globally
accepted norms, Siruthuli plans
to setup low cost sewage water treatment plants
in the tanks themselves thereby improving the
quality of the ground water. A proposal to setup
a treatment plant in valankulam has been forwarded
to Coimbatore Corporation.
