Coimbatore, Jan 12: KARAM (Kovai Aid for Rehabilitation
And Motivation), a movement recently formed by leading
industrialists in the region, has decided to adopt Kameshwaram
village, near Velankanni, which was severely affected by the
recent Tsunami waves.
An action plan to this effect has
been drawn, after some of the members of the movement visited
the area and made an offer to the district collector, to
rehabilitate the entire village at an estimated cost of
Rs.three crore, Vanitha Mohan, one of the trustees of Karam,
told reporters here today.
The village, with a population of 990 and 210 families,
have lost their houses, fishing boats and nets, with 34
casualties, Vanitha said adding Coimbatore District Small
Industries Association and PSG and Sons have promised to build
100 houses each for the displaced persons.
The administration has shown the model of the proposed
house, costing about Rs.34,000 each, which would be
constructed about 750 metres from the seashore, she said.
The people in the village have expressed their desire to
lead a life based on self-respect than charity. Karam also
proposed to provide fishing boats and nets to those who eager
to go to the sea for fishing.
Vanitha also said that the movement in future would
function as disaster management organisation to work during
any emergency in any part of the State. (Agencies)
