Coimbatore, Jan 12: KARAM (Kovai Aid for Rehabilitation And Motivation), a movement recently formed by leading industrialists in the region, has decided to adopt Kameshwaram village, near Velankanni, which was severely affected by the recent Tsunami waves.

An action plan to this effect has been drawn, after some of the members of the movement visited the area and made an offer to the district collector, to rehabilitate the entire village at an estimated cost of Rs.three crore, Vanitha Mohan, one of the trustees of Karam, told reporters here today.

The village, with a population of 990 and 210 families, have lost their houses, fishing boats and nets, with 34 casualties, Vanitha said adding Coimbatore District Small Industries Association and PSG and Sons have promised to build 100 houses each for the displaced persons.

The administration has shown the model of the proposed house, costing about Rs.34,000 each, which would be constructed about 750 metres from the seashore, she said.

The people in the village have expressed their desire to lead a life based on self-respect than charity. Karam also proposed to provide fishing boats and nets to those who eager to go to the sea for fishing.

Vanitha also said that the movement in future would function as disaster management organisation to work during any emergency in any part of the State. (Agencies)
