Siruthuli organizes various events from time to time that are of interest and benefit to the community. Additionally, the community invites Siruthuli to participate in activities and programs that help to further the environment or community related causes.

Noyyal Yatra - 2nd of October 2005:

Mother nature in our region is represented through our River Noyyal and is badly in need of complete rejuvenation and restoration. The water bodies of the entire River basin have to be standardized and given adequate additional infrastructure to handle effluents, sewage and garbage generated by our industries and population. This needs research analysis and resources to keep our Noyyal on a sustainable basis also taking into account the developments in the times to come. In order to achieve the same we need the support of the government, media and the general public. Any program needs to be launched through a large exercise with public participation. Therefore on behalf on Coimbatore and the people of the Noyyal basin Siruthuli conducted a Yatra on Gandhi Jayanthi the 2nd of October 2005 from the origin of the Noyyal [ Kooduthurai near Madhvarayapuram] upto the point at which the river crosses the city limits [Singanallur tank].

Namadhu Valankulam – Thursday 26th Jan 06: Siruthuli made a clarion call on 26th January 2006 by organizing an awareness drive through a signature and art on canvas campaign. On this historic occasion Siruthuli invited people from all walks of life to participate in this one-kilometer long signature and art exposition on canvas campaign. The 1-kilometer long cloth banner was fixed on Sungam by pass Road [on the bund of Valankulam] on 26th January 2006 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m onwards to facilitate the signature campaign and art exposition.

Shri.G.K.Sundaram – Chairman Lakshmi Groups of Companies a reputed senior citizen of Coimbatore inaugurated the campaign and hoisted the national flag. General Public, students and teachers from all the Educational Institutions, Service Organisations, Industrial establishments and associations of all kinds pledged their solidarity for the cause by joining this campaign. It is estimated that about 6000 participants showed their solidarity by signing in the campaign. Many people even expressed in favour of beautifying the tank bund so that it turned into an asset from an eyesore.

And, there were thousands of signatures and slogans and paintings in support of the drive for a clean Valankulam. And the most surprising signature on the banner was that of the Mayor of Stuttgart in Germany, Morowski. In the city as part of a trade delegation, he also promised assistance to Siruthuli's efforts at reviving and conserving water resources.

Valankulam:

Valankulam is a strategically located tank situated in south zone of the city with the southern bund connecting Trichy Road in Sungam and Palghat / Pollachi Road in the Ukkadam region. A bypass road laid by the Highways Department connects Sungam and Ukkadam over a length of 2.8 kms. After many years Valankulam has reached the maximum water level during the recent rains. The total tank bed area of Valankulam is 160 acres. Periakulam and the rainwater from the city are the principal sources of water for this tank. Due to the letting of sewage water into the tank, it has become a breeding ground for water hyacinth.

Valankulam mainly serves the area that charges our aquifers on the southern and eastern side of Coimbatore. This sector contains the Collectorate, Bus stand, Railway station, host of Educational establishments, Hospitals, Industries, Airport, Government Offices etc., and therefore it is extremely important to the citizens of Coimbatore as also to the vast visiting population.

Such an important tank has been contaminated with polluted water and the entire adjoining areas of the tank are also being misused. There is rampant and indiscriminant dumping of building debris and garbage on the bunds and also into the tank, this affects afforestation activities also. The sewage water that is directly let into the tank, contaminate the water in addition to polluting the ground water.

Siruthuli has proposed to restore Valankulam by:
Removal of water hyacinth and garbage
Desilting and standardizing the bunds
Establishing a bird- park
Construction of sewage water treatment plant
Planting saplings on the bunds
Creation of a walker’s path
Boating zone for the public
